NZSTI Conference June 2020

NZSTI Conference 2022 Team

The 2022 conference is being organised by members of the NZSTI Wellington Branch.

Although we would have loved to hold an in-person or hybrid event in the capital, the uncertainty of the current situation led to the decision to hold the conference online for the second year in a row. We are excited to make the most of all this format has to offer, including welcoming guests and speakers from far-flung locations, and bringing a stimulating and relevant programme to the NZSTI membership.

What does the joy of language mean to you?
I discovered the joy of language in my childhood through the storytelling mastery of fairy tales from around the world and “Krabat” by Otfried Preußler. My second and third languages were Latin and English. While Latin was considered a dead language, English came very much alive through the legendary music and lyrics of “Queen”, and this was the beginning of my fascination with learning more languages and becoming a translator.

What does the joy of language mean to me?
I enjoy playing games with words and their bewildering meanings.

What does the joy of language mean to you?
Language gives me joy because it allows me to see the same world with different eyes. I will never stop learning and loving the world of languages.

NZSTI Conference 2022 Team

Mandy Hewett is a freelance translator working from French and Italian into English with a strong focus on sustainability and the environment.

What does the joy of language mean to you?
I can still remember the joy I felt the first time - I was in a group of people where French, English and Italian were all being spoken - my brain just seemed to grasp each concept and transfer it to whichever language I needed to respond in. That was quite a few years ago now but that joy of grasp and transfer is still with me.
